What a weight-loss trial found
A trial compares treatments in a group of people. The dummy injection provides a comparison without the study medicine.
Over 68 weeks in STEP 1, adults with excess weight but no diabetes lost 14.9% on average with semaglutide, compared with 2.4% with a dummy injection.
The study included help with eating and physical activity, as well as regular visits, and was funded by Novo Nordisk. Its averages do not predict a person’s result.
Ask about the cautions as well as the goal
The Wegovy weight trials reported nausea in 44% on the injection versus 16% on a dummy injection; diarrhea, vomiting and constipation also occurred.
Nausea means feeling as though you may vomit.
The semaglutide labels carry a boxed warning, their strongest alert, about thyroid tumors found in rodents; the effect in humans is unknown.
The labels exclude use after medullary thyroid cancer in either the patient or a family member; this is a rare thyroid cancer. They also rule out the medicine for MEN 2, an inherited condition that is rare.
A prior serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or its ingredients also rules it out under the labels.
