# Online or in a room: what needs to be clear?

Start with the conversation you need, not just the quickest way to open a visit.

Choose a format that leaves room for your questions.

The conversation

You may speak on video or exchange information online. Ask what kind of visit you are paying for.

The conversation

Ask how long the visit allows for your questions and what records to bring.

Exams and tests

Medical-board guidance says clinicians assessing someone remotely must arrange tests or an exam referral when those are needed for the assessment.

Exams and tests

Ask what can happen during the visit and what would need a separate booking.

Getting help later

Find out where questions go, who reads them and how the reply process works.

Getting help later

Ask the same questions; being in a room does not explain the follow-up plan.

## A form is not the whole story

Medical-board guidance, checked September 26, 2026, rejects using a fixed form alone to treat someone when missing health details cannot be gathered.

An online assessment can fit that guidance when the clinician can ask follow-up questions and gather the health details needed. State rules still differ, as of September 26, 2026.

Find out who reviews the information you submit and how to raise your own questions. Tell the service if you need help with video, reading a form or sharing records.

## Ask about the next step when remote care falls short

Medical-board guidance sets the same standard for telehealth care and visits held in person.

A useful plan names the next step if an exam is needed. Ask whether the service arranges that step, sends a referral or expects you to find it.
