# Tirzepatide: match the brand to the purpose

Ask for the exact product before comparing an offer or reading a trial result.

Tirzepatide brands and approved uses checked September 26, 2026.

The product question

The reason to ask

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound)

Tirzepatide acts on GLP-1 and GIP, gut hormones that send signals about food and blood sugar.

Understand the explanation

Ask why this medicine fits your health needs. Acting on more than one hormone system does not tell you which medicine fits your care.

Mounjaro

Mounjaro has approval for type 2 diabetes care. Weight loss falls outside its approved uses.

Confirm the goal

What use are we discussing, and how does the plan handle coverage?

Zepbound

Zepbound is approved for weight management and, for adults with obesity, for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.

Confirm the condition

Sleep apnea means repeated breathing pauses or shallow breathing during sleep. Ask which condition is being treated.

## Ask for the form as well as the brand

Approved tirzepatide products include pens and vials, as of September 26, 2026.

A vial is a small bottle; a pen is an injection device. Ask who makes the product and which form the quote covers. Do not try to settle the question from a container picture alone.

## Keep benefits and burdens on the same page

A trial compares treatments in a group of people. The dummy injection provides a comparison without the study medicine.

In SURMOUNT-1, adults with excess weight but no diabetes were studied for 72 weeks. Groups received different strengths of tirzepatide. Average weight loss ranged from 15.0% at the lowest study strength to 20.9% at the highest, compared with 3.1% on a dummy injection.

Lilly supported the trial, which included advice on eating and physical activity plus regular visits. These are group averages, not a promise about your result.

In Zepbound weight trials, nausea affected 25% to 29% across groups receiving different strengths, compared with 8% on a dummy injection.

Nausea means feeling sick to your stomach.

### Bring up birth control and health history

The Zepbound label tells prescribers to advise non-pill or backup birth control during the first four weeks of treatment. It gives that same advice for four weeks following each dose increase.

The labels exclude use after medullary thyroid cancer in either the patient or a family member; this is a rare thyroid cancer. They also rule out the medicine for MEN 2, an inherited condition that is rare.

Under the labels, a serious allergic reaction in the past to tirzepatide or its ingredients rules the medicine out.

Their boxed warning, the label’s strongest alert, concerns thyroid tumors in rats; whether this occurs in humans is unknown.

Bring these points to the prescriber The birth-control statement reports label instructions to prescribers. Ask for a plan that fits your own circumstances.
